History of Buxtons, a family owned business since 1919
PH Buxtons & Sons, Early Days of Buxtons….
Founded in 1919, as a small shop in Ditchling Road, Brighton, selling second-hand furniture, Buxtons soon grew under its founder Percival Buxton, quickly gaining a reputation for providing quality goods and assuring customer satisfaction.
After WWII and the subsequent re-opening of the shop, Buxtons built further on its range of services as a premier retailer of the district, introducing stocks of new furniture, prams, cycles, toys, carpets and linos. This rapid growth led to shops opening in other areas of Sussex (in time Shoreham and Crawley branches (inset)). It was the 1960′s and the development of the shop 1962-4 (inset) into more of a department store that brought about fundamental change with the introduction of the Contract Flooring department.
Through the 1970′s, 80′s and 90′s, Buxtons reputation strengthened further as a trusted, local independent retailer offering furnishings, beds, prams, toys and carpets. Moreover, during these at times economically turbulemt decades the Commercial Flooring department continued to grow.

Buxtons Commercial Flooring, Contract Flooring, into the 21st Century…..
In 2006, there were significant changes to the business, with a partial move from the original Ditchling Road site. This move involved relocating the flooring and blinds divisions to modern offices and showroom at the newly built Woodingdean Business Park on the outskirts of the city (historically the site of the old Sunblest Bakery).
The retail furnishings maintained a city centre prescence at Ditchling Road for a short period (2006-2009) selling Contempory furniture and accessories (inset), after which it closed to concentrate on the busy flooring business at Woodingdean.
The current location of the business offers many advantages to both staff and customers – with modern facilities and easy, free parking. Although now on a business park, and with the inclusion of ‘flooring’ to our company title, our company ethos remains as it was almost a century ago – to provide quality goods, and to assure customer satisfaction.
